
Heels are a symbol of femininity: they accentuate your feet and also have a slimming effect on your body. But for some women, wearing heels is something of a challenge. You have to learn how to walk right and look right in heels.
Heels for body figure
- If you’re full-figured: Choose relatively high heels that will make you look slimmer. Walking in heels regularly will tone your muscles up without you realizing it.
- If you’re short: Choose heels that are comfortable to wear on a regular basis, such as ones with platforms or square heels.
- If you’re tall: There’s no need to feel as if you're on stilts. Choose thin 6cm heels to avoid looking like a giraffe.
- If you’re slim: Anything goes! You can look stylish in knee-length skirts. Teamed with skinny trousers, heels give you a chic but rock look.
Walking in heels
- To walk well in heels, you need to use your hips like you’re strutting down the catwalk in order to find your balance.
- Get used to your heels. Practice wearing your heels on small trips or around the house, especially when they are new.
- Choose the right height. The lowest heels are around 3cm high. If they're over 9cm, your foot will be too arched and you risk losing your balance. A good heel height is around 5-6cm.
- Wear heels at least 2-3 times a week. When you're wearing flats, you're feet grow accustomed to your weight being applied evenly. And so if you only put on heels once in a while, the weight fluctuation is a total shock and can cause a lot of irritation.
- Don't sit down all night. Once you're out in heels for the night, try not to spend the whole time sitting.
- Walk heel to toe, not toe to heel. While it might be tempting to put your whole foot down at once, don’t do it - it makes your walk look strange when you’re wearing high shoes. Instead, put your heel down first, followed by your toe. This will give you more balance and make your stride look more natural.
